Social Workers

Social workers help people overcome problems and make their lives better. If people are homeless, sick, or having family problems, social workers will work with them. If students have trouble in school, social workers help them too.

Social workers help these people in different ways. One way is to find resources for people. They find out what kinds of help people need. Then, they set up programs to meet the needs of the individual12. They may focus on child abuse, poverty, violence, and other problems. For someone with family difficulties, social workers may find a parenting class or a support group. For a homeless person, they may find a place for them to live and a career training program. For a student, they may find a mentor or a learning disability expert.

Many social workers give counseling. They talk to people about their lives and help them understand and solve their problems and to make plans.

Most social workers spend the day in an office. Some travel to the people they help. Sometimes, they meet with people in the evening or on weekends. Social workers can be very busy when they are helping many people at once.

Helping International Students Make Friends

One study in the United States found that thirty-eight percent of foreign students said they had no close American friends.

Elisabeth Gareis teaches in the Department of Communication Studies at Baruch College in New York. She says efforts on how to improve relationships between foreign and American students have yet to be studied in detail. But she says these efforts should begin with the college or university, and that these institutions have been working harder.

Ms. Gareis suggests that students should be encouraged to take part in different activities, such as taking walks, going on bike rides, field or camping trips, and attending parties, sporting events or film festivals. She says such activities should be held repeatedly throughout the school term to bring students together. She also suggests that foreign students share housing with American students.

She says if the new students make friends as they begin school, they will come to feel part of the life and traditions of the university, as well as create long lasting friendships throughout their university career.

Three Things to Bring you More FriendsDo you lack friends? Do you want to make more friends? If so, you may read on…There's a certain beauty in being a lone wolf. You have more time to do the things you want to do. But if you want to make more friends, and do things together with them, please consider these suggestions on how to meet people and form strong, lasting friendships.Spend more time around people and talk to them. If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out in order to meet people. Friends seldom come knocking on your door while you sit at home playing computer games. Participate in an online community. You don't necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. Social networking sites such as Wechat, Facebook, Twitter, and My Space are great way to meet new people and learn more about the people you meet. Join a sports team. A common misunderstanding about this is that you have to be really good at playing a particular sport in order to make friends with others on the team, but not all teams are so competitive. As long as you enjoy the sport and support your teammates, joining a local team could be a great way to make new friends.

Letter 1

Dear Ann,

I am going to give a dinner party next month. I want my guests to enjoy themselves and to feel comfortable. What is the secret of giving a successful party?

Sarah

Letter 2

Dear Mary,

Cook something that would let you spend time with your guests. If a guest offers to help you in the kitchen, accept the offer. It often makes people feel more comfortable when they can help.

Before serving dinner, while your guests make small talks in the living room, offer them drinks. Some guests may like wine, but make sure to provide soft drinks for people who don’t.

At the dinner table, let your guests serve themselves. Offer them a second serving after they finish, but don’t ask more than once. Most guests will take more if they want.

Perhaps the most important rule of all is to be natural. Treat your guests as you want them to treat you when you’re in their home—that is, act naturally toward them, and don’t try too hard to be polite. Have a good time in a pleasant atmosphere.

Yours,

Vida

A Car Stopped Just in the Middle of the Street

Joan has been charged with a misdemeanor by asking her 13-year-old son to drive, putting her child in a dangerous situation. It was Joan's 32nd birthday, so she decided to go out for dinner with her 35-year-old boyfriend, Donald, as well as her 13-year-old son, Mike. Joan was so happy that she drank two bottles of wine with her boyfriend. When it was time to go home, both Joan and Donald were too drunk to drive. They knew it clearly that both of them couldn't drive home safely after that much wine, so they sat in the back seat and asked Mike, Joan's 13-year-old son, to drive the 2008 Land Rover.

Being a driver for the first time in his life, Mike could receive no help from his mom or Donald. They were too drunk to tell him clearly what to do. He started the car nervously, but when he realized he couldn't control the car at all, he was scared and depressed. He decided to stop the car and refuse to drive any further. He called the police for help. When the police arrived, they found the car was stopped right in the middle of the street.
